There are programs to help in closing costs, and there are still some for down payment assistance. There is nothing for the credit impaired though. Make sure to pay all your bills on time.

Jo

There isn't anything for "personal use".

I would think since you "want to be a first time home buyer" you would be saving up your money.

I saved like crazy to buy my first house. I bought nothing for myself and lived on cheap food. I put every dime away that I could. Now I own over 30. No handouts, no grants, just saved and invested. I even survived the housing crash without a single missed mortgage. YOU CAN DO THIS!! Look to yourself for help, not other people, YOU!!

Ann

My husband and I just bought our first home in May, and we only had to pay 500 dollars down. We were entered into a state-based first-time home buyer's program in which there were no closing costs and a lower-than-average interest rate. You should call at several banks in your area and ask them if they have any programs for first-time buyers (which I am sure they probably do since it's a buyer's market these days) and ask them about down payment assistance. Hope this helps and happy house hunting!

Dawn

They are not free- you have to pay interest on it like a HUD loan. 203K HUD loan gives you extra money like if the house cost 100,000 and you need 30,000 in repairs- they give you a loan for 130,000 but you will have a bigger mortage and will need to pay ever penny pack. Plus they control how the money is used- like it has to be used on a new roof- not a new sofa. No one is just going to give you free money for "personal" items. And you still need to have money to put down and closing fees.

Darrell

Sometimes you don't automatically get everything you want. You better be looking at extreme fixer uppers in wretched neighborhoods if you want in as a free gift. Save up for roach spray..

There are so many deals out there right now...you can pretty much get whatever you want without having any money down. Just shop around and be sure you can afford what you get!
